Prints

Many members use  www.dscolourlabs.co.uk in Didsbury. Their current price for a (top quality) A3 (16″x12″) is 95p – which is way cheaper than most photo print sites. You can pick up from in-store or have them posted (DJG).

Mounting

Most of our members do their own mounting which costs a £1 or two per print. Doing your own mounts is very satisfying and by the time you have bought your own mount cutter and done about made about 20 mounts you will  start making a big saving over having them done professionally. Many members purchase materials from Turners … as below but if you are “time poor” …

… “Frames” on Lapwing Lane in West Didsbury charge about £7 for cutting a window mount and fixing it, and pic onto a 500mmx400mm back board. (DJG)

Mounting Supplies

Turners Art Supplies of Stockport have competitively priced mount board, cutters, tape etc. They are on the other side of the road just downhill from the Town Hall. 10% discount for WGPS members (I think). The web site has improved from early days but doesn’t (for example) seem to include mount board – best to go in person. The general consensus is that the Logan cutter is the best performer and is reasonably priced … there are a variety of cutters from basic cutters  to complete kits. Many of use the basic cutter. A non-slip straight edge is a valuable additional item. (JF)

…. Following a  price rise (Feb 2015), Turners mount board is £2.25 per sheet for their cut price range which comes in white/off-white or black/dark grey colours.  With two days’ notice they will get it cut to size for you – charging £2 to cut a batch of sheets or free if you are buying 40 or more sheets.  (You will still need to cut your own window in the front mat).  The Logan 301-1 Compact cutter is a good option (Newcastle Arts Centre sells it at a good discount).  Doing your own mounts is very satisfying and by the time you have bought your own mount cutter and done about made about 20 mounts you will  start making a big saving over having them done professionally. Consumables

Value Shop is a good source for inkjet cartridges, both original and compatibles. Originals are about 2/3rds retail price. Also laser toners. And other computer consumables. It appears to be front window for a major logistic operation supplying the trade. My orders usually come by post from a unit in Trafford Park in a day or two. Watch for the postage break at £49.99. Equipment

Wex and Jessops are two suppliers that seem to offer good service and good prices. Jessops is now owned by ‘Dragon’ Peter Jones and has a shop in Manchester.  Wex is mainly mail order but does have a showroom on the outskirts of Norwich if you are down that way. (JF)

Canvas Prints

I have had good value canvasses from Snapmad (part of 7DayShop). I don’t have much to compare them with but was happy with what I wanted them for. They frequently have offers – worth signing up for the email. (JF)

PhotoBooks etc.

I have yet to pay anything like full price for a photobook – my tip is to sign up with Albelli, BonusPrint, Photoworld (& probably others). I receive regular offers of significant discounts on the standard prices. Also had a good deal on good quality place mats from Snapfish. (JF)
